Is that one tree or shrub in your yard bugging the crap out of you? Are you ready to take the fate of your garden into your own hands? Have no fear, you can teach yourself how to prune your way into a new garden.
One of the best ways to learn about pruning theory and technique is through pruning reference books. But don’t worry, you don’t have to dig through boring technical manuals. There are many enjoyable and interesting pruning books out there, you just need to ask the right gardener!
Here are my favorite pruning books, and the books I keep on hand in case I need a little advice or inspiration:

Guide to Pruning by Cass Turnbull, 2012
This pruning manual is great for beginners. This guide includes lots of diagrams and illustrations that break down the pruning basics. Cass is a local Seattle gardening legend and this book is where most Seattle-based horticulturists start!

The Pruning Book by Lee Reich, 2010
Once you’ve gotten a little more comfortable pruning in your garden, read The Pruning Book. This book has loads of pictures and diagrams, helping you gain more confidence and knowledge in your pruning.
These books will help you improve your pruning technique and pick out the best gardening tools. And if pruning just isn’t for you, don’t worry, hired gardeners are here to make your life easier!
